Polish Customs and Traditions

Ciupaga | Walking Stick ...

 Polish Folk Art.

Polish Ciupaga / Walking Stick

In days of yore, the highlanders carried walking sticks called in polish "ciupaga" ("chew-pa-ga"). The handle functioned as an axe; the pointed tip doubled as a spear. Handmade ciupagas are crafted in Poland from a long solid piece of mountain hardwood, and decorated with a solid brass handle and fittings.

Ciupaga is an extraordinary piece of history to display in homes or used during a folk dances.

[ Above are the paintings on the postcards from 1940, done by  Zofia Stryjenska,
where  we  can see  the traditional wooden  axe used during the dance. ]
